Established in 1946, the UN Information Center is responsible for US/UN issues and serves as a liaison to Congress, the US government and foundations in Washington as well as to the media, academic institutions and public across the United States. The Center includes a small reference library that houses official UN documents as well as other materials published by the United Nations. The office also supports high-level visitors from headquarters and field offices around the world. UNIC's fellowship program presents an enormous opportunity for college students and post-graduates seeking challenging fellow-work experience in international relations. The Center accepts fellows three times a year (Fall, Winter/Spring and Summer) with deadlines posted on the website on a unpaid basis for a period of three months or more.
UNIC fellows have a broad range of responsibilities that include everything from representing the office at Washington events to fielding public inquiries. As part of the program, fellows attend Capitol Hill hearings and NGO/think tank briefings on a variety of international subjects and report back to the office and UN headquarters on what was said. UNIC works with each fellow to enable him/her to attend meetings on topics of particular interest. Another facet of the fellowship program involves monitoring international and regional news and keeping UNIC abreast of important UN-related developments. In addition to these primary responsibilities, fellows are responsible for assisting with UN events, outreach and public inquiries. They are also given the opportunity to help write UNIC's weekly newsletter and assist with visits of UN officials and conduct research for UN staff and projects. Likewise, fellows are expected to assist with some administrative duties and contribute to the day-to-day functioning of the office.
How to apply:
Fellow selection is highly competitive. We receive more than one hundred applications each semester for 5 positions. Preference will be given to students in their senior year of college or graduate school, with major area of study in international relations, political science, communications or related field. Students should demonstrate excellent language, research and writing skills. Past experience in a professional office environment is an asset. Knowledge of Microsoft office is required. Preference is given to students who can work full-time with a minimum of 3 days per week required.
Strong candidates will have demonstrated knowledge of the United Nations system, the U.S. Government, Washington think tanks and media. They will also have previous international experience and strong interest in the UN and its focus areas. He/She will have a professional demeanor and the ability to work in busy office with changing priorities and minimal supervision. Above all, the strongest candidates will have a can-do attitude and a sense of humor about themselves.

    Key Responsibilities:
    As a member of the CGIAR, WorldFish implements its work through the recently created CGIAR Research Programs. It is an important period for both WorldFish and the Bangladesh country office as it is one of significant and rapid growth at a time when the organization is within a transition period to new ways of working. WorldFish is committed to our people, their growth and their development in order to maintain high quality, responsive and adaptive program management. Under the direct supervision of Country Director with a dotted line reporting to the Head Organization Development at WorldFish, WorldFish seeks a creative, dynamic and innovative individual to work alongside the Bangladesh Country Director and Country Program leader to ensure that growth is well managed and effectively integrated across 300+ staff within the WorldFish Bangladesh office.
     
    She/he will responsible for:
    • The successful candidate for this position will be responsible for providing leadership to ensure that change and growth are effectively planned and managed across the entire portfolio of WorldFish projects (currently 17 major projects with an annual budget of over $10 million) in an integrated fashion.  This role would incorporate change management including effective workforce planning and development of a succession planning strategy.
    • A key element of this would be ongoing support and embedding of the WorldFish Leadership development initiatives which would be conducted at the highest standards, and in a timely and efficient manner which meets the needs of all the WorldFish managers and science staff.
    • The successful candidate will advise in areas of change management, organization effectiveness and performance issues and works in partnership with the Bangladesh senior leaders to orchestrate cultural development and organization change initiatives that enable achievement of strategic goals. This position provides advice and support aimed at building organizational cohesion, health and flexibility. A key component of this role will be to perform an advisory function and direct coaching for senior leaders within Bangladesh.
    • The successful candidate will bring experience in change management and organizational development ideally at both the strategic and operational level. They will have oversight of and be a primary supporter to the current suite of organization development initiatives underway in Bangladesh as well as for the design, development and implementation of additional relevant Organizational Development initiatives as required. These initiatives will be aligned strongly with and underpin the successful delivery of the Bangladesh country strategy and associated plans and align with the strategic direction of the WorldFish people and organization development team.
    • Closely work with Bangladesh Program Priority Leader (PPL) of Capacity Building Development.
     
    Skill Requirements:
    • A successful candidate will have: a MA in an appropriate field such as Organizational Development, Organizational Psychology or Strategic Human Resource Management
    • Minimum of five years' experience in a high level Organizational Development position with a major international or national development/science organization
    • Other qualifications and accreditations in coaching, psychometrics and organization development will be highly regarded
    • A proven track record in providing innovative approaches to leadership and people development
    • Experience leading growth and / or change management at scale
    • Excellent written and spoken English language skills
    • Excellent qualitative human analytical skills and the ability to present information clearly and concisely in both spoken and written form
    • Fluency in some or all of the following software packages - MS Word; MS Outlook
    • Experience in one-on-one coaching as well as team coaching would be valued highly.

    Key Responsibilities:
    WorldFish, Bangladesh and South Asia is hiring an Intermediate Results (IR) 3 Scientist for a 5-year, $15 million dollar project funded by USAID called 'ECOFISH' in order to meet its vision: "Be the research partner of choice, delivering high impact, transformative and equitable fisheries and aquaculture solutions to reduce poverty and malnutrition in Bangladesh and South Asia". The key objective of the ECOFISH project is to improve the resilience of estuarine ecosystem and livelihoods of communities reliant on the Hilsha fishery.
     
    Fisheries and aquaculture are important for many in Bangladesh, especially the poor. The fisheries provide income, livelihoods and nutrition. In particular, Hilsha fish species is the most important national fish both in terms of both consumption and value. WorldFish and its strong research partners (BFRI among many others) are researching technologies for increased production and productivity and enhanced management of Hilsha fisheries in order to increase the supply and access of Hilsha both under domestication and encatchment.
     
    The Project Leader/ Senior Scientist will be hired to deliver to the USAID ECOFISH project. As the leader of the project the successful candidate will be charged with improving the resilience of the estuarine ecosystem and the livelihoods of communities reliant on the Hilsha fishery in Bangladesh. They will directly supervise three sub-leaders in seeking to improve science-based fisheries management decision-making; strengthen fisheries adaptive co-management, and enhance socio-ecological and economic resilience of target communities, respectively. Collaborating closely with WorldFish staff on other research projects and integrating research findings is vital for the success of the ECOFISH project.
     
    Under the direct supervision of Country Director of WorldFish Bangladesh and Discipline Director NRM, HQ, WorldFish Malaysia this position will be required to supervise and provide support to staff assigned to the ECOFISH project as follows:
     
    As the leader of the project the successful candidate will coordinate a body of research with three IR Scientists and will be charged with improving the resilience of the estuarine ecosystem and the livelihoods of communities reliant on the Hilsha fishery in Bangladesh. They will directly supervise three sub-leaders in seeking to improve science-based fisheries management decision-making; strengthen fisheries adaptive co-management, and enhance socio-ecological and economic resilience of target communities, respectively. Collaborating closely with WorldFish staff on other research projects and integrating research findings is vital for the success of the ECOFISH project with delivering the followings:
     
    • Improved application of science and community engagement into resource and conservation planning and decision making;
    • Strengthened community-based monitoring of target fisheries and technologies           
    • Improved payment for ecosystem services scheme;
    • Technical assistance to strengthened enforcement;
    • Strengthened co-management of habitat in marine and riverine zones;
    • Increased stakeholder engagement to enhance conflict mitigation and protect common-pool resources.
    • Access to finance (A2F) for technology uptake, targeting poor women;
    • Livelihood diversification for poor and vulnerable households, and increased equality in the value chain;
    • Strengthened collective action and accountability in support of resilient livelihoods;
     
    Key responsibilities:
     
    • Provide overall technical leadership to develop and coordinate three streams of research that collectively improves the resilience of estuarine ecosystem and livelihoods of communities reliant on the Hilsha fishery in Bangladesh.
    • Oversee and be responsible for financial and administrative aspects of the project including managing subcontracts with local service providers and managing the project budget whilst ensuring compliance with established WorldFish accounting principles and CGIAR regulations.
    • Monitoring program indicators, evaluate program results and making recommendations for improvement in program implementation.
    • Analysing project impacts and challenges to adaptively manage the project to meet or exceed results, and importantly ensuring women and marginalized groups are beneficiaries of the project.
    • Preparing annual work plans and progress reports, and monitor the implementation of these plans. Synthesising learning and producing quality scientific documents as required by the funding agency, for internal WorldFish requirements and broader national and international science and development communities.
    • Interacting directly and on a regular basis with USAID, WorldFish HQ office and other stakeholders
    • Participating in regular field visits to the project areas to assure project progress towards activity objectives and goals.
    • Advance understanding of the impact and roles of fisheries management in achieving CGIAR intermediate development outcomes and sustainably meeting food, nutrition and poverty reduction.
     
    Some of the key activities this person would supervise include:
     
    • Overseeing a Stakeholders Workshop and an Inception Workshop;
    • Begin the Branding and carry throughout in collaboration with USAID and DoF
    • Conduction a Requirement Analysis/ Need Assessment;
    • Empowerment of Implementing Partners to begin their work;
    • Hiring of field staff or empowering field partners;
    • Reconnaissance field visit in six sites of 3 regions explicitly Cox's Bazar, Potuakhali and Sundarbans Zone and determine action sites;
    • Close collaboration with relevant staff from the Government of Bangladesh, international and national;
    • NGOs in scaling up and scaling out conservation interventions
    • Close collaboration with the relevant institutions of the Government of Bangladesh in developing and implementing policies and strategies for the promotion of Hilsha;
    • Represent WorldFish Bangladesh in relevant national and international forum in Hilsha conservation and coastal water management.

    • Ph.D. in Fisheries and/or Aquaculture, preferably with research on coastal fisheries management and/or Hilsha fish species covering areas such as ecology, policy, economics, or resource assessment;
    • Up to 10 years of experience in a developing country context conducting research on community-based fisheries and/or aquaculture management a with a focus on enhancing resilience;
    • Up to 5 years' experience in project programming, implementation, and supervision, training and capacity building in direct reports;
    • Experience in stakeholder participation and community engagement, with a specific understanding of the role of social norms/cultural beliefs in fisheries management in producing gender-equitable outcomes;
    • Experience of interacting with national, regional and international R and D practitioners and policy makers;
    • Excellent proficiency of spoken and written English with strong research and writing skills.
     
    Desired
    • Knowledge of ecosystem services analysis and mechanisms for Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES); adaptive co-management; micro finance; conservation planning.
    • Excellent skills in written and oral English, and a track record of publishing and presenting results and future plans;
    • Proven ability to successfully lead a multi-disciplinary team and partners at all levels from senior international organisations and national government, to field staff.
    • Preferred Bangladeshi national, although an expat with similar experiences would be entertained.

    • Planning competencies: familiar with the use Theory of Change (ToC) for planning, prioritizing, monitoring and evaluation of Research in Development (RinD) initiatives; able to relate individual and organizational activities/outputs to the IRs and the broader Intermediate Development Outcomes (IDOs) and System-Level Outcomes (SLOs) of the CGIAR Research Program on Aquatic Agricultural Systems.
    • Analytical competencies: able to analyse the context of a given development challenge (problem or opportunity) "situation analysis"; able to reconcile the knowledge of different stakeholders and science; competent in systems thinking and have a knowledge of how to apply systems research methodologies.
    • Process competencies: able to facilitate a multi-stakeholder group to a common objective and mutual agenda of complementary activities.
    • Learning/ PAR competencies: able to use/embed participatory action research and rural appraisal tools, creating a learning culture; able to understand and manage change processes and deal with resistance; able to work in an interdisciplinary team.
