Appointment of Executive Director AT TWAWEZA

Dynamic, influential and widely respected, Twaweza is a leading citizen-centered initiative in East Africa focusing on citizen agency, basic learning, open government and public accountability. Twaweza means, "We can make it happen," in Swahili and focuses on large-scale change. Rakesh Rajani, a Tanzanian civil society leader, founded Twaweza and has steered the start-up and establishment of the organisation from 2009 through a period of extraordinary growth and change, culminating in the launch of a new strategic framework. Rajani is stepping aside at the end of this year.

Through the excellence of its applied research, its pioneering thought leadership, and innovative approaches to engage citizens and governments in Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda, Twaweza not only influences the countries it serves, but also plays a global role, notably with its large annual household based assessment of basic numeracy and literacy 'Uwezo' and through involvement in the Open Government Partnership.

Twaweza is now seeking a new Executive Director. Working with a variety of innovative partners from different backgrounds in both the public and private sectors and by driving a rigorous learning agenda, the new Executive Director will bring about fresh ideas and lead the organisation to deliver on its mission.

Candidates will have the highest level of integrity, value openness and transparency, and deep knowledge and relationships in East Africa are essential. The successful person is an East African citizen with excellent command of Swahili, will have a passion for, and a depth of experience in citizen-centred development and policy engagement, along with a profound understanding of research processes. With proven leadership and management experience, and highly developed communication and ambassadorial skills, the Executive Director will continue building upon the new strategic direction as well as the reputable position of the organisation.
