Organizational Context
The post is located in the Economics Section of the Economics and Statistics Division. This Division is responsible for providing accurate, comprehensive and timely statistical information on the performance of the IP system worldwide; and providing high quality empirical analysis addressing economic challenges in the international IP system and assessing the economic effects of IP policy choices.
The incumbent is responsible for assisting project management and conducting economic research for country studies on intellectual property (IP) and socio-economic development under project CDIP/14/7.
The incumbent works under the direct supervision of the Chief Economist of the Economics and Statistics Division (ESD) and in close cooperation with the Division's economists and statisticians and WIPO Member States.
Main duties
The incumbent will perform the following principal duties
  1. Assist in the management of country study projects, by drafting project documents and communicating with relevant stakeholders;
  2. Draft portions of substantive proposals for country studies, taking into account available data and the analytical needs of policymakers;
  3. Develop and maintain databases on IP and economic performance, particularly at the firm level, and engage in statistical analysis of the underlying data;
  4. Carry out and draft components of economic research studies and build the technical and analytical capacity in countries where few economic studies on IP have been undertaken;
  5. Draft project concept, implementation, monitoring and evaluation documents;
  6. Participate in the activities of the Division, country missions and dissemination events related to project CDIP/14/7;
  7. Perform other related duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education
  • Advanced university degree in economics or a related field, preferably with a thematic focus on intellectual property and innovation as well as an empirical focus.
Experience
  • At least three years of professional experience in policy-oriented economic research gained in an academic setting, international organization, government institution, think tank, or equivalent environment. Experience in the field of IP.
  • Strong background in data analysis, including in the use of relevant software tools for database management and statistical analysis.
Skills
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound and expert judgment and initiative.
  • Excellent report drafting skills.
  • Ability to manage multi-stakeholder research projects.
  • Competent user of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and the internet.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and ability to maintain effective partnerships and working relations in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
Languages

47,292 USD
50,420 USD (with primary dependants)

92.4 % of the above figure(s). This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
Additional Information
  • Salaries and allowances are paid in Swiss francs at the official rate of exchange of the United Nations.
  • Please note that the salary is composed of the base salary (indicated above as 'Annual/Monthly Salary') + the post adjustment. The post adjustment is designed to compensate the differences in living costs, thereby providing the staff with the same purchasing power at all duty stations. It is expressed as a percentage of the base salary.
  • Temporary appointments are renewable, subject to continuing needs, availability of budget and satisfactory performance with a maximum cumulative length of two years.
