Communications Officer

SNV is one of the largest Dutch development organisations, with operations in almost 40 of the poorest countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. As communications officer you are part of a small and collaborative Communications team within the Global Support Unit in The Hague. We are looking for an enthusiastic and creative English writer that will help SNV to produce top quality publications and other communications materials.
In your role you will be writing and generating content based on the input you get from SNV staff in the field. As a Communications Officer you will assist staff in the field with editorial support and safeguard correct use of SNV brand guidelines. Furthermore you will manage publications from start to finish, including acquiring quotations for design work and layout, printing, selecting photos, managing timelines and budgets and other project management tasks.
You will also play an important role in our internal communications management. You will support the roll-out of our new intranet (SharePoint 365) and Yammer and support and stimulate staff in the use of it. You will also be an active contributor to the intranet yourself.
In all these tasks you will work closely with other communications officers, focal points at country level and sector leaders in the field. You will give editorial support, help to improve writing skills of other staff, and give solicited and unsolicited advice.
Key responsibilities
PUBLICATIONS
  • Manage and produce SNV's Annual Report and annual magazine Connect
  • Manage and produce materials around SNV's 50th anniversary (October 2015)
  • Lay out and design of key documents like the Corporate Annual Plan
  • Produce materials for events
  • Update SNV's corporate communications material
  • Produce, support or supervise other publications, like books, videos or brochures
  • Give editorial support to SNV's communications products in the field
  • Monitor correct implementation of SNV branding guidelines in all communications materials
INTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS
  • Actively create content to keep SNV's communications and intranet (SharePoint) up-to-date
  • Promote the intranet internally as a tool for knowledge and information sharing
  • Assist in making and keeping the SNV intranet targeted to field needs
  • Monitor coverage of Managing Board news, provide editorial support on key messages
  • Support the adoption of Smart Development Works as a key concept within the organisation
  • Maintain the Communications Toolbox and image library on the intranet
  • Support the development and roll-out of webinars on communications related topics
Candidate Profile
First and foremost, you are an experienced writer who can turn complex technical reports into attractive articles and stories. You love to play with language, know your way around (visual) storytelling and are able to coach others in their writing skills. Furthermore, you have experience in the development sector and working with people from different cultural backgrounds. You are creative and are able to provide some examples to showcase that.
  • At least 3 years of relevant work experience, preferably in the development sector;
  • Native English speaker (this is a must), knowledge of Dutch is an asset;
  • Educational background (HBO/WO) in e.g. Journalism, Marketing, Communications;
  • Excellent writer and editor;
  • Strong communicator and networker;
  • Experience with project management;
  • Experience with internal communications;
  • Creative and an eye for design;
  • Experience with SharePoint (365), photoshop and/or InDesign is an asset;
  • Independent, yet a real team player.
Desired start date: as soon as possible.
Contract period: until 1 December 2015, with possible extension.
This is a local position. Applicants need to be eligible for work in the EU. Please note that SNV facilitates online collaboration, and that travelling is not part of this job.
