Free Press Unlimited works to ensure that objective news coverage and information are and remain available to people the world over. Particularly in countries where there is little to no press freedom.
Across the globe, journalists and media pioneers have taken it on themselves to supply their communities with objective information. Free Press Unlimited actively supports these professionals in over forty countries, by offering them, among other things, trainings and temporary financial and material aid, and by strengthening their professional capacity. So that as many people as possible gain and keep access to truly vital information.

Free Press Unlimited is currently seeking to hire (as soon as possible): Drafting Expert: Media & Journalism Ethical Charter (Arabic & Arab Country Context) - Expert in Media Regulation and Journalism Ethics. The expert is responsible for drafting a Media Ethical Charter based on existing Ethical Charter Policy Determinants, which outlines the principles, the values and highlight some examples, which all need to consideration. The expert shall thoroughly examine the overall framework of the Ethical Charter programme, after which he/she shall put together a first draft of the Charter. Expert shall also be expected to conduct various consultations with a founding group of the Charter Programme that shall hopefully conclude with the production of a final version of the Media Ethical Charter.

The finalization of the Charter would culminate the conclusion of a rich experience and a series of lively debates that aimed at the development of a Charter that enshrines best-practiced media self-regulations. Through a participatory approach and an open round table discussions diverse group of Middle East media representatives gathered in various round-tables to design an Ethical Charter that reflects journalistic standards that emanate from the debate.

The Arab speaker drafting expert will be focal point to put together (draft, consult, review and present) present the Charter to future signatories. The expert shall also lead a final ceremony event and will facilitate and enrich the content and the output of the debate in the event. The expert will be supported by the project management team in realising this event.

Job responsibilities:
  • Overall responsibility for the quality, accuracy of the charter content while adhering and reflecting the existing Policy Determinants
  • Ensure that the communication and consultations are effective, inclusive and constructive not divisive
  • Make sure the charter drafting production is timely and smoothly
  • Anticipate possible obstacles and identify timely solutions
  • Communicate and coordinate timely and regularly back to the programme team

We're looking for an energetic and driven individual with:
  • Proven experience in ethical journalism matters and charters drafting
  • A media legal and/or media ethics expertise or education
  • Practice-based Knowledge of major international legal instruments (international law, treaties, conventions, declarations) in a range or relevant areas like overall human rights, freedom of information, Freedom of expression, etc.
  • Understanding and expert particular knowledge in diversity, minorities, women, child, crisis and conflict reporting is highly desirable.
  • Previous experience and excellent understanding of media and development in the Middle East
  • High knowledge of subjects, trends and developments around journalism ethics, code of conduct and media regulation
  • Proven methodology and strategy to hold result oriented complex discussions

  • Arabic native speaker, Excellent publishing-standard command of the Arabic language

The expert writer is an output/task based assignment. The final presentation event is planned in August.
