Econometrician / Senior Economist

Our Retail Market Analysis team supports Ofgem's understanding of the retail energy market, monitoring the relationship between customers and suppliers and identifying issues that merit attention from a policy perspective, or require enforcement action, or simply require further analysis or research. As part of this team, you'll manage econometric projects to offer expert analysis and advice on the marketplace, ensuring that our evaluation of the dynamics and trends within it are robust and thorough and that this analysis is effectively communicated and reported. This will involve both quantitative and qualitative analysis and extensive liaison with key players in the industry, with consumer groups and government representatives to support the improved performance of the energy retail market. You should be able to communicate data and analysis effectively, tailoring it to different audiences and presenting it with impact.
Essential qualifications:
  • Degree in economics with a strong focus on econometrics or a degree in econometrics, ideally at Masters level or above.
Essential skills and experience:
  • A demonstrated grasp of economic principles, either through academic qualifications or previous posts.
  • Evidence of applying econometric techniques in a work context.
  • Excellent analytical and quantitative skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including experience in presenting analysis clearly and succinctly so as to communicate complex issues to non-specialists.
  • Experience of project and resource management.
  • Ability to think strategically, so as to understand the work of the team and the Directorate in a wider context, and to understand the wider impact of decisions.
  • Ability to identify and actively manage key stakeholder relationships with professionalism and integrity, consistent with effective and inclusive consultation.
  • Proficiency in using STATA or other econometric packages.
Desirable:
  • Experience of regulatory or competition economics.
  • Good knowledge of the operation of energy markets.
