Culture and Development East Africa (CDEA) is a new organization that was incorporated in October 2011 and has an office in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. We define culture as the 'arts and creative industries,' 'heritage' and 'cultural identities'. We vouch for the protection and promotion of the diversity of cultural expressions. We believe that the social unit of development is a culturally defined community and the development of this community is rooted in the specific values and institutions of this culture. We define development as the expansion of choices not just growth of material production. We see culture as the purpose of development and not just a facilitator or an impediment to economic growth or social development. We have three programmes namely: Culture and Governance; Documentary and Future; and, Institutional Strengthening.
CDEA's Documentary and Future programme is the Social Enterprise arm of the organization. The Documentary and Future Programme aims to enhance the link between our cultural heritage and modern culture through the arts and creative industries- printed word, music and film. While we have a social duty to promote the continuity of local cultures, old traditions meet new creativity every day in cites around the world, contributing to the preservation of identity and diversity. Through this we intend to innovatively capture the Dar es Salaam's rhythm and package it into products that can be marketed to a range of target audiences. The aim of adopting market-oriented options into CDEA is to promote for self reliance and sustainability of the organization.
