ABOUT THE JOB:
NGOabroad is seeking Microfinance Interns in Tanzania. This is a great place to learn grassroots microfinance (much like in Mohammad Yunus' model in Bangladesh) where the emphasis is on peer support group helping micro-entrepreneurs succeed.. Intern will be responsible for helping at grassroot level to pull people out of poverty.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Emphasis on helping entrepreneurs develop small business enterprises or 'income generating' activities that will bring money into their families;
- Emphasis on small enterprise development instead of finance.
- Emphasis on teaching how to save so that it will be possible to pay back the loan
Qualifications:
- Students or seasoned professionals with backgrounds in Business, Entrepreneurship or Social Work
- Academic credentials are not as important as an interest in microfinance
- Strong entrepreneurial skills helpful
- Ability to survey local community and see what is needed/or what would sell well;
- Creative and strong imagination essential to dream up enterprises that have not been thought of or considered yet;
- Social work background helpful but not required in urban setting to work with different client groups: AIDS patient, disabled, prostitutes, youth, and women;
- Strong people skills and knowledge of small business development in order to coach and mentor microentrepreneur to success.
