The Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) is a non-denominational, international development agency established in 1967 by His Highness the Aga Khan. Its mission is to develop and promote creative solutions to problems that impede development in marginalized and isolated regions. AKF is working in Tanzania in sectors that include rural development, education, health and civil society strengthening. The Coastal Rural Support Programme Tanzania, CRSP (T) is a multi-input area development initiative of AKF in Lindi and Mtwara regions. The programme's overall goal is to improve the quality of life and social wellbeing of people in the two regions through sustainable interventions in agriculture and market development, access to finance, health, and education. CRSPT is working on a private-sector led sustainable agriculture approach that combines sustainable production intensification with strengthening markets. The programme is currently working on rice, sesame, and horticulture value chains with the possible addition of legumes and other crops. CRSPT has sizeable reach and is directly working with over 55,000 farmers and more than 250 private sector stakeholders including local entrepreneurs, rural shops, millers, cooperatives, marketing groups, traders and agribusiness companies.
This is a critical position, responsible for coordinating all entrepreneurship and market development activities within the region as well as establishing/promoting links with private sector companies in Dar-es-Salaam and elsewhere under the guidance of the Market Development Manager. The MD Coordinator will lead a team of MD officers.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Develop and coordinate strong relationships with relevant value chain actors (e.g. exporters, traders, input supply companies, processors, cooperative leaders, producer marketing groups)
• Facilitate and lead exposure visits for farmers, local entrepreneurs and cooperatives to observe and replicate good practices in marketing (of rice, legumes and other crops)
• Develop and implement capacity building/training plans for local entrepreneurs/village-based agents, cooperatives, rice/sesame producer groups, and district cooperative officers, and improve their links to markets
• Strengthen network between various market players (village-based agents, producer groups, cooperatives, private companies etc)
• Identity and link producers to lucrative new sesame markets (e.g. through contract farming, new varieties, organic production)
• Facilitate business linkages between suppliers of agro-chemicals and agricultural equipment, and farmers
• Build demand among farmers for purchasing high quality sesame and rice seed by working with facilitators and extension officers on promoting seed demonstration plots
• Coordinate and facilitate strong relationships with TOSCI, District seed officers and others involved in seed registration and certification
• Conduct meetings with seed producer groups and buyers to identify market opportunities (e.g. contract production, agro-dealers, districts) for selling quality sesame and rice seed
• Coordinate and provide logistical support for producer groups on post harvest handling, bulk buying, marketing and other needed group activities.
• To actively monitor activities and adjust MD implementation plan and strategies as required
• Supervise the Business Development and Market Development Officers
• Ensure that project implementation plan, quarterly reports and documents for M & E are up to date.
Qualifications/Experience:
• Minimum of BSc in Business Administration, Commerce or Agriculture
• At least eight years working in business/enterprise or value chain development in a private or non-governmental institution, of which at least 5 years as Business/Enterprise Development Advisor/Officer
• Experience of working in agri-business or agricultural marketing
• Demonstrated ability to coordinate and manage different streams of work and deadlines
• Strong planning, supervision, leadership and management skills.
• A strong work ethic, interpersonal skills, energetic, resourceful, and innovative
• Ability to work in a multicultural environment
• Hard working, well organized and problem solving ability
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and Swahili
• Willingness to live in Mtwara, Tanzania, and travel to remote areas as needed
