With health programmes coordinated by national service companies in large geographical areas in Afghanistan, India, Kenya, Pakistan, Syria, Tajikistan and Tanzania, and more than 200 health facilities including nine hospitals, AKHS is one of the most comprehensive private not-for-profit health care systems in the developing world. Aga Khan Planning & Building Service Companies in Pakistan and India are leading agencies in their countries for water and sanitation programme design and implementation, and work on low-cost and safe housing and physical improvement projects including village and town mapping and planning activities to include disaster mitigation and management issues. Operating in both rural and urban settings, the programmes have helped poor people from a variety of cultures to expand their incomes, improve their quality of life and become self-reliant.
Given the rapid growth of institutions and staff (currently around 5,400) HR management has become a critical function of the unit. Maintaining strong motivation and excellent performance among its staff is a central objective of AKHS/AKPBS senior management.
Responsibilities:
The HR Manager will lead the human resource function within the AKHS/AKPBS's team in Geneva. S/he will
  • Provide leadership and strategic direction on HR issues, and help set HR policies for AKHS/AKPBS and its entities.
  • Contribute to AKHS/AKPBS's overall business strategy by advising on the human resource implications of strategic decisions.
  • Develop the human resources function and recruit, develop and retain the necessary human talent to meet the growing needs of AKHS/AKPBS and its entities.
  • Lead the recruitment, training, performance assessment and development of professionals to support AKHS/AKPBS's activities.
  • Coordinate the network of HR managers of AKHS and AKPBS in the field.
The ultimate measure of success will be identifying, attracting, retaining and developing competent and highly motivated staff and management teams achieving productivity at all levels and delivering superior results.
The position will be based in Geneva and will require frequent travel to the regions where AKHS/AKPBS operates.
The desired candidate should have the following profile:
  • Well established track record;
  • An advanced degree from a leading University/ College, with a further specialization in human resources;
  • 15 years experience with progressive responsibility in a human resources management function, preferably in organization(s) that employ health professionals ;
  • Certification through a professional personnel/human resources association would be desirable;
  • A keen interest in and knowledge of Health, including in developing countries;
  • Familiarity with labor laws, regulations and practices in the regions and countries where AKHS/AKPBS operates;
  • Demonstrable experience of developing and implementing HR strategy, particularly in areas related to performance and talent management, succession planning and retention; compensation and benefits guidelines; and conducting HR audits
  • Excellent leadership and team building skills, reputation for fairness, integrity, character, and sound judgment;
  • Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills;
  • Strong analytical ability;
  • Willingness to travel frequently, sometimes to difficult locations, and at short notice;
  • An excellent command of written and verbal English is essential.
