Main purpose of job:
Responsible for ensuring the British Government's estates in Rwanda and Burundi are maintained to UK standards.
Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve ?:
You will be responsible for the standard of the UK's estates in Rwanda and Burundi. This includes the High Commission headquarters, our Liaison Office in Bujumbura and the more than twenty residential compounds that UK staff and their families live in. You will be responsible for identifying relevant UK government standards on buildings, grounds and utilities. You will be responsible for managing a team of three and some sizable contracts with local maintenance companies to ensure these standards are met at all times. You will work with the regional Technical Works Officer when necessary to achieve this.
You will need to define a regular pattern of routine maintenance to prevent issues arising. You will also need to respond quickly when issues do arise, to ensure they are addressed to the required standard within the agreed timeframe. You will be measured monthly by senior managers against key performance indicators for your work.
When required, you will negotiate short accommodation contracts for temporary staff, and lead procurement of long-term contractors and estates related purchases. You will work with utilities providers to ensure a quality service at the best price.
You will also be ready to provide support across the corporate services team as necessary.
Resources managed
1x S1 Technical Works Supervisor/Handyman; countersigning officer to 2x S2 Technicians; responsible for c. £100k /year in outsourced contracts.

Other skills / experience / qualifications:
Essential on arrival: Managing contracts; line-managing people; Microsoft Office.
