Senior Governance and Rights Adviser

Senior Governance and Rights Adviser
BBC Media Action is the international charity of the BBC which works with media to advance development worldwide. Our mission is to improve the quality of people's lives in developing and transitional countries through innovative use of media and communication. We do this through our focus on governance and rights, health, humanitarian response and resilience. We work in partnerships that include governments, broadcasters, civil society institutions, donor agencies and international Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).

BBC Media Action is largely funded by external grants, mainly from the UK's Department for International Development (DFID), the European Union, UN agencies and charitable foundations.

Role Responsibility

As Senior Adviser Governance and Rights, you will be responsible for the continuing development of our approach to governance and internal strategy in this area. You'll closely support major projects to improve political participation, debate and accountability in countries including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Burma, Kenya, Nigeria and Sierra Leone, as well as the numerous other projects in our governance portfolio. Working intensively with country teams, you'll devise new governance and rights projects and will guide and support our teams to deliver high-impact work in some of the least developed countries in the world.

Playing a key role in BBC Media Action's programme of policy engagement, you'll represent the organisation externally at major events and meetings as well as developing high-profile policy publications. You will be responsible for forging relationships with major partner organisations, including other NGOs, funding bodies and academic partners, with a view to strengthening our own practice, the media for development sector and approaches to improving governance and respect for rights more broadly.

The Ideal Candidate

With strong experience of working with media and communication to improve governance, you'll have an extensive contact list and networks within the field. Your capacity to exercise intellectual leadership in governance and rights and to understand and engage with relevant external research and policy agendas is essential, as is your capacity to link these creatively and practically to the programming and thinking of BBC Media Action.
Strong writing skills and attention to detail are important in this role. You'll also have the capacity to engage with diverse internal and external stakeholders and an aptitude for creating connections across teams, so of course strong interpersonal and communication skills are needed, as is the ability to present to large audiences.

We don't focus simply on what we do – we also care how we do it. Our values and the way we behave are very important to us. Please make sure you've read about our values and behaviours in the document attached below. You'll be asked questions relating to them as part of your application for this role.
