EP 206: THEORETICAL PESPECTIVE TO COUNSELLING

Course Description:

This course on theoretical perspective to counseling is designed to equip students with general knowledge on the origins and theories of counseling.  The course introduces some major theories and concepts in counseling that will help students to develop adequate skills and practice in counseling as professionals.  The course also introduces students to some ethical issues and their implications for practice.

Objectives:

1.                  To sensitize students in the field of counseling as a profession.
2.                  To enable students master the major concepts and theories of counseling and be able to translate them into practice.
3.                  To enable students select wisely workable theories of counseling in the Tanzanian context and develop their personal styles of counseling.
4.                  To enable students appreciate human differences and help each individual differently as a unique person.

Module 1:  Nature of Guidance and Counselling  
  • Meaning of guidance and counseling and their differences
  • Traditional counseling in the African context
  • Counselling as a professional field:
Ø  Its features
Ø  Its principles

Module 2:  Historical Development of Counselling
·         Counselling in developed countries
·         Development of counseling in Tanzania


Module 3:  Counselling Theories
  • Psychoanalytic approach
  • Existential approach
  • Person-centred approach
  • Cognitive-behavioural approaches
  • Family system approach

Module 4:  Career Counselling
  • Meaning of career counselling
  • Theories of career development

Module 5:  Ethical Issues in Counselling




Mode of Delivery: 30 Lecture hours and 15 Seminar hours

Evaluation:
40% Coursework (Assignments, Tests, Presentations)
60% Final Examination
