The International Network for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR-Net) is seeking
an Office Assistant.
ESCR-Net is the largest network of groups and individuals from around the world working
to secure economic and social justice through human rights with over 250 members in 70
countries. ESCR-Net seeks to strengthen the field of all human rights, with a special focus
on economic, social and cultural rights, and further develop the tools for achieving their
promotion, protection and fulfillment. By facilitating joint actions, enhancing
communications and building solidarity between members, the network seeks to build a
global movement to make human rights and social justice a reality for all. The collective
work of ESCR-Net members is supported by a small secretariat staff. For more information

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Reporting to the Institutional Development Coordinator, the Office Assistant will be
responsible primarily for bookkeeping functions and office organization, as well as for
answering information requests and assisting in meeting organization. In addition, the Office
Assistant will be responsible for providing logistical support as needed. At times, the person
in this position will work on additional ad hoc projects with the director and program staff.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Handle all bookkeeping functions for ESCR-Net, including:
o Track and record all income and expenses
o Process invoices and payments, including check requests and wire requests
o Generate financial reports according to program areas, specific
projects/events and grants
• Reconcile credit card statements on a monthly basis in accordance with the
established processes and policies
• Answer the general information requests that come to the Secretariat through
various means
• Monitor, maintain and procure office supplies and equipment
• Work with Institutional Development Coordinator on relevant fiscal and
administrative matters
• Provide back-up support to the Institution Development Coordinator with logistical
aspects of event planning, including travel arrangements, visa research and similar
tasks• Work with Institutional Development Coordinator or other staff on special projects
of ESCR-Net
QUALIFICATIONS | REQUIRED:
The successful candidate is someone who is both detail-oriented and skilled at administrative
and support tasks. Flexibility, collegiality and reliability, as well as the ability to show
initiative and to follow up, are key qualifications. In addition, the successful candidate
should have (requirements):
• Bachelor's degree
• At least 3 years of bookkeeping experience
• Experience using QuickBooks or similar financial software
• Knowledge of and experience using office computer programs, including Word,
Excel and Adobe Professional
• Attention to detail
• Cultural sensitivity and good interpersonal skills
• Ability to multi-task; to work independently; and to work comfortably in a small,
collegial office environment
• Written and spoken fluency in English
QUALIFICATIONS | DESIRABLE:
• Experience with basic financial documents such as balance sheets and income
statements
• Proficiency in Spanish, French or Arabic
• Experience with event planning or travel organization
• Background in social justice work or working within a nonprofit organization
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The ESCR-Net Secretariat is an open office format allowing collaboration. The Secretariat
has a welcoming, cooperative and focused environment. This position will involve extended
computer and desk use on a daily basis.
HOURS AND LOCATION:
This position will be based at the office of ESCR-Net's Secretariat, in the Grand Central
area, New York City. Standard office hours are from 9/10am – 5/6pm, Monday through
Friday.

COMPENSATION:
The Office Assistant is a non-exempt position of 24 hours per week. Time beyond 24 hours
is at the manager's discretion. ESCR-Net offers benefits, including medical, dental and vision
coverage and generous vacation time. Pay is commensurate with experience and comparable
to similar NGOs.
