PhD Studentship in Water Engineering , University of Bath

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship at the University of Bath (UK) starting January 2015 for a project investigating controls on biogeochemical cycling in stratified lakes and reservoirs. The aim of this work is to quantify how the paired effects of turbulence and oxygen availability influence nutrient and metal concentrations and subsequent water quality and ecosystem health, both on local and global scales.
As the limitations of discipline-specific perspectives have become increasingly apparent in light of the pending global water crisis, this project will be interdisciplinary and collaborative. The project will involve a combination of fieldwork, data analysis, and modeling. Applicants should have a degree in engineering or environmental science, although candidates with a degree in a related field and demonstrated quantitative skills will also be considered. Preferred qualifications include experience with fieldwork, laboratory work, and computer modeling/analysis (e.g., Matlab) as well as strong English communication skills, both verbally and written.
The studentship, to be held within the Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering, is full-time for 3 years with a start date of January 2015. The scholarship provides a full 100% fee waiver for UK/EU students or a 75% fee waiver for non-EU students for 3 years. The student must cover their own stipend/living expenses.
The successful applicant will be highly qualified and self-motivated. During the course of the project, they will gain skills in environmental sampling, in-situ and laboratory experiments, and computer modeling as well as benefitting from organised training in a wide range of transferrable skills. They will work as part of an enthusiastic, well-resourced team of researchers, with access to the new water-quality laboratory in the Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering. Solid team-working skills paired with the ability to also work independently are essential.
The Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering at the University of Bath is ranked No. 2 in the UK and the University is ranked No. 1 nationally for student satisfaction. Bath, located in southwest England, is a gorgeous UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its ancient Roman baths, the gothic Bath Abbey, and Georgian architecture.
Interested applicants should send a cover letter describing their interest and experience in the area, a CV, and a list of references to Dr. Lee D. Bryant, who will be the lead supervisor of the project (Email:L.Bryant@bath.ac.uk). Suitable candidates will be instructed to complete an online application form.
