Intern, Higher Education Programs
SUMMARY:
The Higher Education Department administers a number of mobility and scholarship programs that provide students and scholars from a variety of countries with the opportunity to pursue graduate studies or research across a broad spectrum of disciplines in the U.S. The Department also designs and administers tailored training programs for students, faculty, researchers and academic administrators.
The Intern for Higher Education Programs will be responsible for providing administrative and logistical support for programs administered by the department. The intern will primarily work on the Iraq Biosciences Fellowship Program (IBFP). IBFP provides fully-funded opportunities for Iraqi scientists to conduct research at universities and national laboratories in the United States for a period of three to six months. This position is unpaid, part-time and temporary. If you would like to receive academic credit, we are happy to work with you to satisfy necessary requirements.
The position begins as soon as possible and ends in early February 2015. The Intern is expected to work at least 20 hours per week and days/hours are flexible
RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Assist in all preparations related to visa processing and medical examinations
· Conduct research on fellows' host communities, including housing options, banks, local transportation, cultural activities, and local points of interest
· Assist with the planning of events such as participant pre-departure and arrival orientations
· Assist with establishing internet, cable and cell phone accounts for fellows
· Assist in developing content for all program orientations and webinars
· Arrange logistics such as travel, ground transportation and host institution arrival pick-up
· Prepare documentation and process payments for stipend, housing, and other fees
· Screen medical forms for completeness, and perform tracking
· Update participant databases and track document submissions
· Other duties as assigned, including assisting on special projects and research.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Bachelor's degree completed or scheduled to be completed no later than 2018 in Area Studies, International Education, or other relevant discipline;
· Demonstrated organizational ability and attention to detail;
· Demonstrated problem-solving skills;
· Ability to manage multiple priorities quickly and effectively;
· Arabic or other regional language preferred;
· Study abroad or international work experience preferred;
· Strong writing and communication skills;
· Familiarity with Excel, PowerPoint and word processing;
· Proven effectiveness in a cross-cultural work environment; and
· Effective interpersonal skills.
