Job Description
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).
EMBL is seeking a Strategy & Analysis Officer to support the EMBL Directorate and the Head of Strategy Development & Analysis in a variety of strategic and operational activities.
The position includes the following tasks and responsibilities:
- Project coordination to facilitate the implementation of performance management by updating existing or setting up new reporting systems at EMBL;
- Supporting the production of EMBL's five-year strategic plan including gathering information throughout the organization and drafting/editing texts to generate a cohesive institutional strategy;
- Preparing presentations, speeches, briefings and written documents for the Director General for a variety of audiences ranging from scientific stakeholders to political delegates;
- Collection of annual statistics and performance indicators to monitor progress at EMBL and provide services to International Relations and the EMBL Directorate;
- Collecting information on topics of strategic interest to EMBL for proposals for new initiatives or policies;
- Writing reports and summaries of internal and external meetings as required;
- Following developments at EMBL and networking with staff in all sectors.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should have a degree in life sciences and first professional experience in the area of research-related project management, science management or communication in an international setting.
The ideal candidate will have excellent organizational, analytical, writing and communication skills. (S)he will have a passion for life science research and be interested in the political aspects of scientific strategy. (S)he will be capable of quickly grasping complex scientific concepts and communicating them effectively to different target audiences, ranging from scientists over policy-makers to the media. Candidates should have outstanding interpersonal skills and be able to work effectively as part of varying teams. Ability to work fast and to deadlines and to handle a number of tasks simultaneously is essential.
A very good knowledge of MS Office applications, in particular the presentation software packages Powerpoint and Keynote, email and internet applications is required. Applicants should have excellent written and oral English skills. Knowledge of the other official EMBL languages, French and German, is advantageous. The role is likely to involve some international travel.
