Masters by Research for Chemistry & Chemical Engineering Graduates
The "Isolation and recovery of valuable materials from waste paint products" project is an exciting opportunity to undertake a 1 year funded, Masters by Research project - Using chemistry to create a "circular economy", working with a major industrial manufacturer.
An exciting opportunity for a graduate in chemistry or chemical engineering to undertake a funded 1 year Masters by Research degree. You will work in a partnership including a major industrial manufacturer which has built their business through an in depth understanding of polymer and inorganic chemistry. The aim is to find value in and use for surplus and waste paint and other materials including:
  • Rejected components of manufacture
  • Washings from polymer production
  • De-watered filter cake from water based manufacture
  • Old/surplus paint which is deemed unfit for secondary use.
The researcher will have access to the expertise and laboratories at Lancaster University, and via the manufacturer. A tax free stipend of £13724 is paid (equivalent to a salary of circa £18,000). A contribution of £2,000 towards the researcher tuition fees will be made by the project partners. Some travel and access to a car is essential. The start date is September 2014.

Project supervision
  • Nimtech Ltd.
Nimtech Limited is a social enterprise committed to improving recycling and to help people back into employment. This project works with Nimtech on a project to assist a major industrial manufacturer find added value in their waste streams. The aim is to identify, extract, re-use and recycle components of the waste with a view to creating and designing new products which may be returned to the supply chain, "a circular economy".
It is anticipated that the researcher will initially spend time at the company and with their partners to understand the business opportunities and interest although will also work at the university.

The project is based in the new Department of Chemistry at the University. This new vibrant department is committed to making its impact on society and the economy through its work with business and other organisations

Centre for Global Eco-Innovation
This project is part of the Centre for Global Eco-Innovation which brings together the expertise, resources and global contacts of Lancaster University and the University of Liverpool, together with international commercialisation consultancy Inventya Ltd. The aim of the centre is to form collaborative R&D partnerships to enable and drive innovation in businesses, supporting the development of new products, processes and services for the global marketplace that have positive environmental benefits.
By joining the centre you will receive a stipend payment of £13,726 for the year and a contribution of £2,000 will be paid towards your Masters tuition fees by your partner business. The appointed candidate will finish in a strong position to enter a competitive job market in the UK and overseas. The Centre for Global Eco-innovation is the only centre of its kind in Europe and is part financed by the European Regional Development Fund.
