This position is located in the Office of the Legal Counsel, Office of Legal Affairs. The Legal Officer reports to the Assistant Secretary-General for legal affairs through a Senior Legal Officer or Principal Legal Officer.
Education
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) with emphasis in public international law is required. A first-level university degree in law in combination with two additional years of professional experience in public international law may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional experience in law, including legal analysis, research and writing is required. At least three years of service as a legal officer in an intergovernmental organization or government, handling issues of public international law is required.
The following experience is desirable:
1. Experience in at least three of the following topics: (1) privileges and immunities of intergovernmental organizations, (2) international peace and security, (3) mandates and operational framework for peacekeeping operations and special political missions, (4) international criminal tribunals and UN-assisted national or special criminal tribunals, (5) treaty law and practice, and (6) procedural issues related to meetings of United Nations principal and subsidiary organs and other related entities or intergovernmental organizations.
2. Experience in the preparation of draft host country, conference and other agreements, or other legal texts and instruments required for the conduct of institutional or operational activities of an intergovernmental organization.
3. Experience in the preparation of talking points for use by senior officials or giving oral presentations on complex issues of public international law in a governmental or intergovernmental setting.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable.
