Description: World Education is currently accepting applications for a Teacher Training / Coaching Specialist for an anticipated $25-50 million USAID-funded program to improve reading and learning achievement in grades 1-4 in Tanzania.
This position will be based in Dar es Salaam.
The Teacher Training/ Coaching Specialist will be responsible for coordinating all training and coaching activities focusing on improving district-level delivery of in-service training and on-going professional development in the area of early grade reading, writing and arithmetic (the 3Rs). S/he will be responsible for developing and initiating new methods for teaching literacy in the early grades, training teachers in the use of student-centered learning methods, and reinforcing teachers' understanding of first language transition issues. S/he will also collaborate closely with government and education officials to coordinate, supervise and support all aspects of training delivery and in-school support and will lead the transfer of best practices, orientation, and refresher training of other non-government partners.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop an approach to effective teacher training and coaching in the 3Rs across all levels of the system.
  • Plan and coordinate the roll out of teacher training for reading in target languages across target districts.
  • Supervise and manage staff in delivery of teacher training and coaching.
  • Establish and maintain regular policy and technical dialogue with the MoEVT and other relevant agencies with respect to teacher training and coaching.
  • Supervise the performance of master trainers on a sample basis to determine if teachers are applying the intervention and lessons as planned, and provide structured support to district and other resource persons for future support of teachers.
  • Provide regular support to MoEVT identified teacher training experts with respect to the experience and lessons learned.
  • Provide feedback to curriculum developers to further enhancement of curriculum and lesson plans as related to the delivery of the materials (how usable lesson plans are, easy to follow, etc.).
  • Contribute to various assessments related to time on task, teacher effectiveness, and other aspects that play a role in effective teaching.
  • Provide support to government agencies and other partners for the transfer of teacher training approaches, skills, and documents in additional districts in Tanzania.
  • Coordinate with WEI home office staff to ensure a regular influx of new ideas, innovations, and lessons learned.
  • Integrate IT platforms into teacher training and coaching to be used by various providers.
  • Conduct sporadic assessments of student performance to determine the progress, as well as assessment of teacher uptake of the EGR materials.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • A master's degree in education or a related field.
  • At least 8 years of experience in developing teacher training curricula and coordinating teacher training activities and inputs.
  • Significant experience in education development for reading and/or literacy in early grades.
  • Early grade math experience a plus.
  • Established working relationships with education government counterparts in order to achieve improved reading performance.
  • Experience in meaningful collaboration with government and ministry counterparts, and local capacity development.
  • Proven ability as a facilitator/trainer and manager.
  • Fluency in English, and preferably in Kiswahili.
