Description: World Education is currently accepting applications for Senior Reading Specialist for an anticipated $25-50 million USAID-funded program to improve reading, writing and learning achievement in grades 1-4 in Tanzania. This position will be based in Dar es Salaam.
The Senior Reading Specialist is responsible for providing technical oversight and guidance to staff on essential components of the reading and writing program including curriculum design, lesson planning, instructional approach, teacher professional development, materials development and distribution, classroom-level assessment and large scale assessment to develop highly effective activities in these areas.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide oversight and quality assurance in the design, implementation and evaluation of reading curricula and supplementary materials across multiple languages.
  • Serve as the technical counterpart for MoEVT and non-ministry stakeholders in the development and adaptation of appropriate teaching and learning materials, including scripted lesson plans across multiple languages.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of effective teacher professional development programs including teacher preparation, induction and in-service programs, and supportive supervision focused on primary grade reading curriculum design and materials development for early grade reading.
  • Develop new and strengthen existing partnerships with education institutions that can contribute to the creation and delivery of teacher professional development.
  • Leverage M&E data collected on an ongoing basis to inform adjustments in the project's approach and ensure continued improvement in student reading outcomes.
  • Collaborate with the government partners and subcontractors responsible for coaching and community mobilization, to ensure the technical accuracy of their approaches
  • Ensure complementarity of program approaches in reading across the Target districts, liaise with government representatives and technicians on technical matters, and bears ultimate responsibility for ensuring that children in project-supported schools achieve improved outcomes in reading.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in education with a specialty in early grade reading preferred; Ph.D. or Ed.D. with a focus on curriculum development, reading and writing instruction preferred.
  • 10 years of experience working in primary education in sub-Saharan Africa, preferably in Tanzania with a specific focus on curriculum design, lesson planning, instructional approach, teacher professional development, materials development and distribution, or classroom-level assessment and large scale assessment.
  • Prior experience in the development of early grade reading materials, training programs, classroom monitoring protocols and tests and assessments.
  • Prior experience working with communities to support improved reading is preferred.
  • Early grade math experience a plus.
  • Prior experience serving in a technical leadership capacity on USAID-funded projects preferred.
  • Proven ability to lead, manage, and motivate personnel.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability (verbal and written)
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English, and preferably in Kiswahili.
