Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Implementation Support Section (ISS), Organized Crime and Illicit Trafficking Branch (OCB), Division for Treaty Affairs (DTA), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in Vienna, Austria. After one year, subject to the availability of funding and depending on the overall implementation of the programme, it is planned to relocate this position to a field office in Libya or another country in the Sahel region, to the Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa, in Egypt (ROMENA) or to the Regional Office for West and Central Africa, in Senegal (ROSEN). The incumbent will report directly to the Legal Officer (Head of the Global Firearms Programme ) and work under the overall supervision of the Chief of Section.

Education
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in law, criminology, political or social science or related disciplines is required. A first-level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience, including three years at the international level, in law enforcement, criminal justice, prosecution, international relations, crime research, social or political affairs, is required. Relevant experience in areas related to firearms control, such as legislative assistance, criminal investigation and prosecution, legal defense, at national or international level, is required. Experience in project or programme management and administration is highly desirable. Working experience in monitoring, verification, storage, transfer and destruction of firearms is highly desirable. Working and living experience in developing countries, including participation in firearms control missions is desirable. Experience working with the United Nations system or similar international organization is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English, i.e. oral and written proficiency, is required. Working knowledge of French is required. Working knowledge of Arabic is highly desirable. Working knowledge of Spanish is desirable.
