The US Embassy is seeking for an individual for the position of Health Unit Assistant in the Health Unit Office.

BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION

The incumbent serves as the Health Unit Administrator in the Embassy Medical Unit under the direct supervision of the Physician. In his absence, supervisors are the Medical Unit nurses. 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
40%
Directs day to day operations of the embassy Health Unit and provides a wide range of specialized support services to the Embassy Physician and the nurses. Assist with the implementation of health care, medical paperwork for physical examination of post personnel. Greets all patients on arrival. Provides copies of medical records for personnel departing post. Ensures that all sensitive and confidential patient records are kept appropriately protected in locked cabinets.

Serves as the initial point of contact in the Health Unit for Patients. Answers all phone calls to the Health Unit. Schedules appointments for patients at the Health Unit, local hospitals, physician offices, laboratories and radiological facilities.

Assists with exchange of information between Dar es Salaam Health Unit, and the Regional Medical Office in Nairobi. Assists under supervision with preparation of cables for Embassy Physician at the Health Unit, including Medevac authorization cables.

Assists Embassy Physician in preparation of presentations to the Embassy Staff by the Health Unit. Plans and organizes representational and community events.

Keeps track of patient visits and prepares monthly statistics to be submitted to MED Washington. Assists in keeping inventory for medical supplies, and assists HU with procurement.

Serves as a backup for the nurse during her absence, in carrying out all non – nursing functions. Perform other duties as needed by The Embassy Physician.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

All applicants must address each selection criterion detailed below with specific and comprehensive information supporting each item.
  1. Education: Completion of Secondary School (form IV) is required.
  2. Prior Work Experience: At least two years of experience in Administrative/ Computer/ Phone service is required. Prior working in a Medical Office is useful.
  3. Language proficiency: Level IV (fluent) in English and Kiswahili (speaking, writing and reading) is required.
  4. Knowledge: Should have knowledge of the health unit day to day routine, should have knowledge of basic medial terminology.
  5. Skills and Abilities: Tactful in dealing with people at the front desk. Should be capable of handling patient's expectations. Must be tactful, kind and welcoming. Must be appropriately firm and clear at times. Excellent communication skills and computer skills (use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
SELECTION PROCESS

When fully qualified, US Citizen Eligible Family Members (USEFMs) and US Veterans are given preference. Therefore, it is essential that the candidate specifically address the required qualifications above in the application.
