The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Post-doctoral fellow who will be a key contributor to and significantly increase gender expertise in the CGIAR Research Programs on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS, http://ccafs.cgiar.org/) and Livestock and Fish (L&F,http://livestockfish.cgiar.org/) through research on social contexts and structural and normative conditions affecting opportunities for increasing gender equality in livestock value chain development in East Africa, with attention to reducing risk for women due to climate change and reducing emissions through making dairy production more efficient.
ILRI works with partners worldwide to enhance the roles that livestock play in food security and poverty alleviation, principally in Africa and Asia. The outcomes of these research partnerships help people in developing countries keep their farm animals' alive and productive, increase and sustain their livestock and farm productivity, find profitable markets for their animal products, and reduce the risk of livestock-related diseases. www.ilri.org

Responsibilities:
• Design and implement a comparative study on the social contexts, structural and normative conditions affecting opportunities for increasing gender equality in East Africa dairy value chains
• Work in partnership with the East Africa Dairy Development project (EADD,http://www.heifer.org/eadd/index.html) to establish participatory research that enables both rigorous social science and feedback to EADD.
• Work with the CCAFS East Africa Dairy Project, including the upcoming Dairy NAMA (Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions) project.
• Promote information sharing across projects and use lessons from this work to inform the work in the L&F Tanzania dairy value chain and possibly other L&F value chains; to inform gender research in all of CCAFS contributing Centers.
• Produce at least two journal articles, two policy briefs and other communications to support the use of research results for development outcomes.
• Participate as a team member of CCAFS and L&F in annual program development.
• Contribute to fundraising to expand social science gender work on value chain development.

• PhD in Rural Sociology, Sociology, Anthropology, Political Science, Social Psychology, Gender Studies, International Development, Agricultural Economics, Geography or related field.
• Training in Gender relations, and social change, research for development, knowledge of livestock value chains and East Africa desirable.
• 1-2 years of relevant experience in similar role.
• Able to work independently and to meet deadlines.
• Appreciate importance of working in a multi-disciplinary team and able to do so
• Good partnership skills.
• Good communication skills, both oral and written, in English. Knowledge of another language is an advantage.
• Ability and willingness to travel in the field within East Africa, sometime up to 2 weeks at once.

Post location: The position is based at ILRI's Headquarters, in Nairobi, Kenya.
Duration: 2 years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding.
