ICARDA Vacancy: Research Technician II – Wheat Breeding
The International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) seeks to hire a Research Technician II – Wheat Breeding who will be a member of ICARDA-Ethiopia team.
The International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) is an international autonomous, non-profit, research organization temporarily based in Beirut, Lebanon supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). ICARDA is committed to the improvement of livelihoods of the resource-poor in dry areas by enhancing food security and alleviating poverty through agricultural research, and the equitable use of natural resources. Key Responsibilities:
  • Assists the spring bread wheat breeder by carrying out all duties and responsibilities needed for the spring bread wheat breeding program at Kulumsa and Debrezeit stations of Ethiopia;
  • Provides support for research activities of spring wheat breeding at Kulumsa and Debrezeit stations;
  • Assists in preparing of field plans, land preparation, sowing, harvesting, threshing of breeding and disease nurseries;
  • Preparing seed materials for various nurseries for planting at research stations;
  • Supervises field crop management (weeding, fertilizer application and irrigation);
  • Assists in collecting, managing and summarizing data Control daily workers;
  • Managing of greenhouse/glass-house/laboratory research activities and crossing program;
  • Manages ICARDA capital items and consumables under his/her responsibilities;
  • Following up on international nurseries and field books;
  • Performing any other job assigned as per requirement of wheat breeding program.
Education:
  • College Diploma or BSc degree in Breeding/Genetics or related fields with considerable demonstrated ability in field and laboratory research.
Experience and Skills:
  • At least five years for college diploma or two years of experience for BSc holders (preferably working in crop Breeding/Genetics);
  • Good experience in field research management;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in data recording and management;
  • Ability to work in a team and willingness to travel to different parts of the country;
  • Computer skills (MS Office, Windows, etc), data entry and analysis skills;
  • Good commands of spoken and written English and Amharic;
  • Second grade national driving license (optional).
Duty Station: Kulumsa, Ethiopia
Grade: 2B
Minimum Base: Birr 11,193 (Negotiable, depending on experience, skill and salary history of the candidate).
Terms of appointment:  This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position, initial appointment is fixed term for two years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding. The ILRI remuneration package for nationally recruited staff in Ethiopia includes very competitive salary and benefits such as life and medical insurance, offshore pension plan, etc. The ILRI campus is set in a secure, attractive campus on the outskirts of Addis Ababa. Dining and sports facilities are located on site.
