Location: Tanzania

Contract duration: 12 months (with possible extension)
Salary: Highly competitive with Tanzanian NGO market rate

Job purpose
To lead the capacity-building of various local radio partners.
The Senior Trainer will be required to spend approximately 75% of their time visiting partner radio stations in Tanzania and 25% working with Dar es Salaam-based partners and project staff. The Senior Trainers time will be split between 50% media management and marketing and 50% on journalism.
The Senior Trainer will improve radio production skills as well as the sustainability of local community radio stations by:
• Advising and training local radio stations in how to realise long-term increases in revenue
• Supporting local radio stations to develop stronger internal systems and build management capacity
• Strengthening radio production skills of partner radio staff with a focus on elections
Main Duties
• Implementing a national conversation mentoring strategy to selected partner radio stations.
• Provide in-depth and on-going support to partner radio stations as per the objectives of the project.
• Identify training needs for existing and new partners in order to facilitate the design of suitable training and mentoring packages.
• Deliver training as necessary to support station development, and oversee, where needed, the delivery of training packages and other formats to other media organisations.
• Conduct private sector mapping exercises and determine how the private sector can be used for reinforcing a national conversation radio programme and training goals.
• Spot check and analyse the partner radio programme in order to provide feedback to production teams
• Deliver marketing training to key radio station staff
• Deliver management training to key radio station staff
• Support the development of a marketing and revenue strategy
• Deliver training in sales and marketing techniques
• Work with key radio station staff to execute medial sales
• Lead the development of a marketing and management training approach for local radio stations incorporating existing BBC Media Action strategies and approaches
• Deliver management and marketing training to BBC Media Action internal staff
• Deliver any other tasks related to this role as required by the line manager
• Contribute to narrative and financial reports on project implementation.
• Deliver internal training to BBC Media Action staff when needed
• Contribute to the general development of BBC Media Action training manuals and curricular.
• Deliver any other tasks related to this role as required by the line manager
Required skills, knowledge and experience:
• Minimum Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Mass Communication and/or Marketing
• Experience of working on media for development
• Significant experience of planning training courses and implementing training to journalists in Tanzania/Africa
• Minimum five years' experience as a trainer
• Experience working in marketing
• Experience of operating effectively in difficult, highly politically sensitive and often fluid environments
• Strong editorial judgment
• Strong skills in radio production
• Excellent interpersonal, communication and influencing skills.
• Good working knowledge of computer packages
• Technical knowledge on radio programme editing.
• Must be fluent in both written and spoken Kiswahili and English
• Ready and able to take the initiative, originate action and be responsible for the consequences of decisions made
Desirable experience and skills:
• Experience of working in the media sector, especially local media houses, governance radio programming/ marketing roles
• Experience working with an international organisation
• Experience working with a media organisation
• Knowledge of BBC Editorial Guidelines (Radio). Demonstrable interest in governance issues in Tanzania
• Ability to present sound and well-reasoned arguments to convince others. Can draw from a range of strategies to persuade people in a way that results in agreement or change
