Introduction
The vacancy is intended for among ONGAWA's development project located in the rural Same District, one of the six districts of Kilimanjaro Region. This district is the southern-most of all and largest with total population being 235,440 inhabitants living in 91 villages (2009 census). About 90% of the population lives in rural areas, and the best sources of income are agricultural and livestock.
The project is intended to eight (8) communities adjacent to Chome Nature Reserve, located in the upper basins of the rivers Hingilili and Yongoma. This action seeks to achieve sustainable economic growth, restore the balance between forest and their adjacent communities to preserve natural resources; and finally, maintain the benefits arising from this action (land, water, biodiversity, etc) for the current populations and future generations.
The current project is not a continuation of an earlier initiative; but it is part of the ONGAWA's strategic work in Same District. ONGAWA has accumulated experience for more than seven (7) years implementing long-term programs in different areas of the district.
About the Project
The project seeks to address the main obstacles faced by small farmers in the area for developing ginger business as an alternative livelihood and economical incentive aimed at a greatest impact to reduce the degradation of the Natural Reserve of Chome resulting from illegal logging, prohibited mining, and related forest, land, other natural resources mismanagement. The action promotes options for sustainable conservation and equitable economic activities.
ONGAWA is looking for a qualified Tanzanian to fill the vacancy of "Project Officer (Agronomist)" for the entire project.
Target Group
The total direct beneficiaries of the project are the inhabitants in the 8 rural communities of Lugulu, Kanza, Mtii, Myombo, Vuje, Mvaa, Bombo and Mjema. All of them are communities of Same District and are located adjacent to the Nature Reserve of Chome. Number is 20.081 persons (% woman: 51%).
Activities/ Responsibilities/Main Tasks for a "Project Officer (Agronomist)"
The Agronomist Project Officer is responsible for assisting the Programme Manager for ensuring the following:
- The tasks related to the management of the agriculture activities of "Socio-economic development in 8 communities adjacent to N.R. of Chome, through the ginger business" project.
- The planning, budgeting and justification tasks related to the agriculture activities of "Socio-economic development in 8 communities adjacent to N.R. of Chome, through the ginger business" project, following the guidelines and procedures of La Caixa donor.
- The proper implementation and follow up of agriculture activities of "Socio-economic development in 8 communities adjacent to N.R. of Chome, through the ginger business" project.
- Advocacy activities linked to agriculture component in the mentioned project.
- The proper follow-up and monitoring of the agriculture activities implement by the local partner of "Socio-economic development in 8 communities adjacent to N.R. of Chome, through the ginger business" project.
- The smooth coordination of agriculture tasks in targeted villages with the components developed in the framework of another program funded by the European Union called "Sustainable Management of Chome Nature Reserve", with special attention to the Water Resources Management component.
- The proper follow-up and monitoring of "livelihood activities" implemented in the 8 targeted communities adjacent to N.R. of Chome", based on the abovementioned program, "Sustainable Management of Chome Nature Reserve".
- A good working collaboration with the staff and actors/partners of the project, e.g. Same District Council, FaidaMali, Tanzania Forest Conservation Group (TFCG), Pangani Basin Water Board (PBWB), Chome Nature Reserve Office (CNRO), etc, etc.

Experience | At least five years working in Land farming or rural development projects. Experience working in Field Farming Schools (FFS) Experience working in mountain rural areas of Tanzania. | Knowledge of the country and the districts involved. Work with other NGO or contractors in development projects. At least 2 years experience as agronomist project officer in any reputable organization. |

Employment Duration
Fixed term contract of employment of 1 year period (probationary of 3 months period), and renewable yearly upon a series of successful and evaluated performance factors/criteria. Further to this, employment contract may be renewed at the discretion of ONGAWAconsidering but not limited to:
i. Availability of project funding
ii. Availability of the position (i.e. there is not a situation when no work remains for the employee, e.g., at the end of a project, as part of the exit strategy, etc.)
iii. Performance evaluations provided by immediate supervisors, support staff and collaborative professionals encountered during contract period.
