Laboratory Scientist/ Manager
Key function(s):
To manage the SACIDS-sponsored molecular biology laboratory at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and perform lab-based tasks in the fields of molecular biology, microbiology, virology and infectious diseases.
Main duties and specific responsibilities of the post:
1) Oversight and management of laboratory equipment and resources, to ensure safe, regulatory compliance and expeditious processing of technical information and analysis in support of Centre/Site objectives.
2) Develop and Optimize the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and ensure good laboratory safety processes.
4) Take part in supervision and guidance of personnel engaged in performing experiments in the laboratory.
4) Responsible for operating the Genetic Analyzer and generation of DNA sequences in line with requirements of the laboratory and on-going research programme(s).
5) Provide hands-on assistance to researchers and students working in the laboratory when required.
6) Supervises activities of laboratory technicians and/or assistants.
7) Oversees or performs instrument and equipment calibration, preventative maintenance, trouble shooting, and repair.
8) Keeps records and logs of all work done by laboratory and checks all work for both clarity of report and accuracy.
9) Maintains inventory of necessary supplies and reagents and ensuring quality of supplies while observing necessary cost containment measures.
10) Other duties as assigned.
General work conditions:
1) Work station is Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Sokoine University of Agriculture.
2) Work under the primary supervision of Dr. Christopher Kasanga and general guidance of the Head of Department of Microbiology and Parasitology and SACIDS Executive Director/Manager.
3) Working hours can involve evenings, weekends and on-call work.
