Chemonics seeks a regional food security specialist - markets and trade (RFSS-MT) for the five-year (2012-2016), USAID-funded Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET). The project is the world's premier provider of high-quality food security analysis and early warning and collaborates with international, regional, and national partners to provide timely and rigorous early warning and analysis of potential, emerging, and/or evolving food security issues in order to inform appropriate humanitarian response. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world. The RFSS-MT will be based in Pretoria, South Africa.
The RFSS-MT is a senior technical professional who works closely with the regional technical manager, the country teams in the region, and partners to design, execute, and coordinate regional activities in the markets and trade technical area. The RFSS-MT will contribute to providing high-quality and effective early warning of threats to food security and support efforts to mitigate food insecurity and crises through the provision of actionable food security analysis.
Responsibilities include:
- Gather and analyze market information and draft analytical reports
- Compile and analyze market data including staple food prices, cross-border trade flows, and crop production estimates collected from countries monitored by FEWS NET in the region
- Design and coordinate/execute activities to build and maintain an up-to-date knowledge base on regional markets for food commodities and livestock
- Contribute to the identification of priority markets and trade activities in line with the strategic orientations of FEWS NET
- Liaise with regional partners to exchange information and promote a dialogue on market and institutional issues on food security, early warning, and preparedness
- Facilitate workshops and the transfer of FEWS NET tools and systems to regional and international organizations
- Assist the regional technical manager in carrying out other technical, management, and representational functions
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in a discipline that is directly relevant to or provides central skills in food security analysis, including economics, agricultural economics, agronomy, and required; advanced degree preferred
- Five years of relevant country or regional experience in agricultural economics and/or markets and trade with direct application in food security, food security information systems, and early warning
- Ability to work and coordinate effectively with regional partners and stakeholders
- Excellent computer skills, including advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Excellent communication, public speaking, and interpersonal skills
- Experience effectively working and coordinating with partners and stakeholders
- Willingness to travel extensively throughout Southern Africa
- Excellent analytical and report-writing skills
- Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
- English fluency required
