Organizational Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.
The UNEP, Regional Support Office (RSO) internship is for 6 months.The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the direct supervision of the Senior Programme Officer ,RSO and as part of a team, the intern will undertake all or some of the following main duties
  • Prepare research papers, case studies and practical guidelines to promote the application of the integrated approach to sustainable development at regional and country level according to the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals;
  • Support the preparation of the RSO led Global Retreat on Integrated Approaches for the Implementation at Country and Regional Levels of the Environmental Dimension of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development;
  • Undertake research and analysis, compile lessons learned and draft relevant reports and papers related to the strengthening of UNEP's strategic regional presence;
  • Support the compilation and drafting of regional inputs to a variety of strategic processes and documents, including those related to the UN Development Group, Quadrennial Comprehensive Policy Review, Small Island Developing States, Least Developed Countries and Landlocked Developing Countries;
  • Undertake political research and analysis on the regional dimensions of relevant global processes, such as the preparations for the second session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-2) to be held in May 2016;
  • Support reporting on the regional follow-up to UNEA-1 outcomes, and support regional preparations for UNEA-2 (including through the preparation of materials for regional preparatory meetings);
  • Attend meetings of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (CPR) to UNEP and prepare summary notes reflecting country positions;
  • Undertake research and analysis, compile lessons learned and draft relevant reports and papers to support UNEP's participation in Delivering as One UN processes, Regional Forums and South-South and Triangular Cooperation as elements of UNEP's strategic regional presence;
  • Any other duties as required, mainly related to analysis and research.
