Student Coordinator



A key member of the Leadership Team and vital to the school's success, the Student Coordinator is responsible for the welfare of over 230 students at Orkeeswa School. He/she is responsible for overseeing all extracurricular and support programs offered at Orkeeswa School led by volunteer coordinators, including Athletics, Clubs, Workshops, After-school Activities, Counseling, Healthcare, Life Skills, College and Career Counseling, Community Service, Agriculture Projects, and Entrepreneurship. The goal of the Student Coordinator is to create opportunities for our students to discover their passion and reach their potential inside and outside of the classroom. The Student Coordinator knows every student and their families. He/she is their biggest advocate and a constant source of support and guidance.
Leadership Team responsibilities:
  • Monitor individual student progress, attendance, health and wellbeing
  • Oversee the development and implementation of student-related policies and procedures
  • Make decisions regarding student recruitment, retention and progression
  • Deal with any disciplinary issues and attendance problems
  • Attend and participate in Leadership Meetings
  • Attend and participate in Academic Committee meetings
Specific Responsibilities:
  • Extracurricular Program: Grow and support Orkeeswa's robust and evolving Extracurricular Program by working with students individually to help design projects and activities that fit their interests and support their growth. Work with each staff member to support, energize and engage them in a diverse array of activities. Lead the Activities Coordinator to ensure students get access to high-quality after-school programming each day, robust club offerings each week, and unique workshop opportunities throughout the year.
  • Athletics: Work with Athletics Coordinator to develop a strong athletics program. Ensure each student gets an opportunity to play sports, if so desired. Ensure the development of a competitive intramural sports program as well as inclusive inter-mural offerings.
  • Community Service Program: Ensure each student fulfills their requisite number of community service hours each year. Provide counseling and guidance in support of their community service.
  • Entrepreneurship Program: Organize the Entrepreneurship Training course. Authorize loan dispersement for student-developed projects and oversee their progress throughout the year.
  • Agriculture Program: Lead Agriculture Projects Manager and oversee gardening, livestock projects and other related activities.
  • Life Skills Program: Work with Life Skills teachers to ensure a well-rounded and appropriate curriculum. Coordinate with Africaid's Kisa program to supplement our Life Skills program for girls.
  • Counseling Program: Ensure each student has the support and guidance they need, particularly when facing challenges at home or at school. Work with faculty, staff and student mentors to ensure each student has a safe and comfortable outlet of support. Through staff development and peer counseling, create a culture of trust at Orkeeswa and empower staff and students to take responsibility for each other's wellbeing
  • Career and College Counseling: Ensure that each student is aware of their options and help facilitate post-secondary education and/or career opportunities. Develop and manage internship program. Oversee professional development and vocational workshops.
  • Student Advocacy: The Student Coordinator is a key representative of Orkeeswa School and a familiar face in the village. Represent the school at funerals, circumcision ceremonies, and other community gatherings to show support for students, their families and the community. Meet with each student's family individually in order to engage them in their child's education and to encourage their support and participation in activities of Orkeeswa School.
  • Healthcare Program: Oversee daily health issues, authorize appropriate treatment, and ensure there are sufficient options for student medical care.
  • Oversee and guide student government and facilitate elections.
  • Manage individual student records in order to monitor and evaluate each student's performance and wellbeing.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
  • Master's Degree in Education or a related field
  • International work/life experience in developing country
  • Previous leadership experience in an academic environment
  • An adventurous and experienced educator who is an advocate for experiential learning
  • Flexible, thrives in challenging environments, good communication skills, strong collaborator
  • Knowledge of Swahili is a plus, or a willingness to learn
