Organizational Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.
The UNEP Regional Office for Africa internship is for 3 months with a possibility for extension depending on the needs of the Organization.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the direct supervision of the Regional Biodiversiy MEAs Focal Point for Africa, (ROA), the intern will:
  1. Conduct research on selected aspects of programmes, operations and other activities, including data collection, analysis and presentation of data and information related to ecosystems and biodiversity;
  2. Undertake research and provide inputs for development of an analytical study on the impact of climate change on migratory species, including their habitats and migration routes, as well as the impacts of climate change on protected areas;
  3. Assist in the drafting as required of project proposals related to Ecosystem Management Sub-Programme for submission to donor agencies, in coordination with other divisions of UNEP and other partners, as appropriate;
  4. Assist in the preparation and finalization of various materials, including briefing notes, outreach materials, responding to memos and other correspondences, as well as the compilation of other Division-wide inputs and reports as necessary;
  5. Support in practical and substantive organization of, in particular, meetings and capacity building activities related to ecosystems and biodiversity and;
  6. Assist in research and analytical papers on the synergies, links, impacts and nexus between biodiversity and land issues, as well as MEAs with selected environmental themes such as land and climate change.

Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
Be computer literate in standard software applications.
Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Studies in MBA, Environmental Studies, or Organizational Development preferred.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is desirable
