MEDIATION OFFICER AT SADC

Regional Political Cooperation Programme (RPC)

1. Background

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) currently has fifteen Member States with a population of approximately 250 million people and a combined GDP of USD 467.3 billion (2006). The overall objective of SADC is to achieve development and economic growth, which is to be attained through increased regional integration, built on democratic principles and equitable and sustainable development.
The programme of "Support to SADC Regional Political Cooperation" was designed to assist SADC in implementing its mandate (given to the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation) to effect regional integration in the political and security sectors.
The programme has an indicative allocation of €24.3m (EU: €18.0m; SADC Member States: €6.3m) and will be implemented over a period of 5 years using the modality of a Contribution Agreement between the SADC and the EU. Consequently, the SADC operational policies and procedures will guide staff recruitment and other implementation and operational processes of the programme.

2. Project Definition

The objective, purpose and results of the programme are detailed below.
Objective
To promote peace and security, as a basis for economic growth and poverty reduction in the SADC Region
Purpose
To strengthen the capacity of SADC to perform its mandate in the area of politics, governance, peace and security
Result Area 1
Democratic institutions in the region are strengthened through consolidated institutionalisation of the SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections
Result Area 2
Regional capacities to prevent and manage conflicts reinforced
Result Area 3
Enhanced regional capacity in respect of disaster risk reduction, disaster risk management and the coordination and support of humanitarian assistance
Result Area 4
Raised awareness, cooperation and action against trafficking in persons, especially women and children, in the SADC region
It is following this background that SADC Secretariat in implementation of the RPC Project wishes to invite suitably qualified, experienced citizens of SADC to apply for the following positions tenable at its Head quarters in Gaborone, Botswana:
