One of our corporate Clients is a subsidiary of the largest and most successful private Insurance company in East Africa. In Tanzania its Head Office is in Dar Es Salaam and branches are in Arusha and Mwanza. In line with our corporate objective of constantly reviewing and enhancing our key performance areas we wish to engage the following person:

Underwriting Manager
Purpose of the Position
The purpose of this position is to manage very effectively and profitably underwriting of health and other general insurance business in Tanzania. Implement strategy for underwriting departments for insurance business. Set up efficient underwriting processes that ensure quality in terms of output of business. Implement insurance policies that compliant with the Insurance Act of Tanzania and manage regulatory returns to ensure compliance of the Insurance Regulator. Manage the reinsurance programs to ensure optimal recovery of claims and optimal risk retention levels.
This position will also act as an independent Cost/Profit centre head.
The Successful candidate will be based in Dar Es Salaam and will report to the General Manager

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Create, maintain and manage underwriting guidelines that is in line with the Insurance Act of Tanzania.
  • Ensures that all documentation in the underwriting are correctly issued and dispatched
  • Ensures that new risks accepted and/or renewed with the company are vetted to meet the basic quality standards as provided in the Underwriting guide.
  • Ensure that reasonable renewal terms are communicated and/or discussed with concerned departments
  • Ensures that all the risks accepted in the company are in tandem with the Reinsurance Treaty programmes and that premium are reasonably ceded into the treaties thus minimizing and/or eliminating chances of under ceding and/or over ceding.
  • Reinsurance: Ensures that the treaty statements of accounts are prepared such as Quarterly statements of accounts, profit commissions, portfolio transfers, non-proportional treaty premium adjustments etc.  
  • Ensures that the statutory statements such as Quarterly reinsurance premium tax, tax on minimum and deposit premium, commissioners treaty renewal statistic etc. are prepared and/or paid on timely basis as applicable.
  • Ensures that the reinsurance transactions are well managed and the records are up to date Policyholder Services
  • Ensure that policyholder details/status for all clients is managed and policy records kept well to ensure the company is not exposed.
  • Ensure policy documents are prepared and produced according to agreed underwriting terms.
  • Ensure monthly reports regarding policies issued, retained and lapsed are prepared timely and accurately.
  • Ensure renewal exercise is carried out and renewal notice and renewal terms and conditions are conveyed to the marketing/customer service team within the agreed time line.
  • Membership and enrolment department of health business
  • Monitor and supervise all the key activities of the membership department
  • Ensure all group and individual members both new and renewal business are properly enrolled in the system
  • Ensure all schemes under health insurance policies are correctly set in the system along with benefit set up, limit set up and price set up.
  • Ensure printing of membership cards.
  • Works closely with Claims/data analyst, Customer service and Marketing department for creation of underwriting data base for projection in business.
  • Coordinates with internal functions such as Claims/Finance/data analyst/marketing/customer services regularly for ensuring all deliverables are met consistently within the promised time line
Qualifications and Experience
The successful candidate will possess the following minimum qualifications

Education:
  • Computer literacy on Microsoft Office suite especially Excel, word and outlook.
  • BS or BA in Business administration in Insurance Management/Risk Management or related fields with proven track records.
  • Graduate/Post Graduate with at least five years of relevant experience in managerial position in General insurance & Health Insurance company managing underwriting & reinsurance department.
  • Holding professional qualification from Insurance Institute of repute like Chartered Insurance Institute, UK etc will be an added advantage.
  • Degree requirement can be waived if candidate meets other requirement Attributes:

  • Possess capabilities in paying attention to detail and follow up, possess good judgment and integrity and
  • Able to remain calm and poised in difficult situations.
  • Excellent Interpersonal skills.
  • Good listening skills.
  • Highly effective and efficient in meeting commitments and achieving results.
  • Enthusiastic.
  • Very hard working person.
  • Fluent in English & Kishwali language.
  • Fast learner, quick thinker and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, technical skills.
