The School of St Jude is a charity funded school that provides a free, high-quality education to over 1,800 primary and secondary children from the poorest communities in Arusha. Additionally, the school now provides employment to over 400 Tanzanians and purchases the essential goods required to run the school everyday from local people. The ripple effect is incredibly wide spread.

About the position

St Jude's is currently seeking an experienced IT professional with management experience to lead our IT Department. The successful candidate will be overseeing the IT infrastructure at at a large educational institution, supporting over 2,200 users and managing over 500 workstations. This is a hands on role and as the senior technical team members, the position requires strong technical and people management skills and the ability to deliver projects to completion. The role also requires understanding of budget processes, team leadership and strategic planning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Managing a team of eight technical staff
  • Preparation of yearly departmental budget
  • Strategic long term planning and development of projects to enhance education within the school
  • Senior technical support for elevated technical support issues
  • Computer networking and performance monitoring, including relevant experience in intranet and Internet service provisioning
  • Administration of LAN and WAN infrastructure
  • Server and workstation hardware management
  • Development and implementation of preventive maintenance planning for the network

Qualifications, Skills & Attributes

  • IT Degree or similar from a recognized University or equivalent experience
  • Experience as a manager or 2IC in a medium to large IT Department
  • Troubleshooting network issues
  • Experience in a virtualised Windows Server based environment
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Exchange 2010
  • Extensive knowledge of VMware ESXi 5
  • Network design and implementation (Ethernet, fibre, wireless)
  • Server and network installation
  • IT staff training and mentoring
  • Strong inter-personal and communication skills
  • Effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
  • Desired but not essential:
  • Database knowledge (MS Access, MS SQL Server
  • VLAN and subnet design
  • Experience with Smoothwall Firewall & Web Filter
  • Experience with Veeam backup technology
  • Familiarity with Unifi wireless networks
  • Familiarity of Spriceworks, Aruti Payroll, TASS School software
  • Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MSCE), Cisco Certified Network Associate (CNNA) or similar IT qualification
  • Work experience in a developing country and/or for an NGO
  • Experience in an education environment (school, college or university)
