Position: Sauti Moja-Tanzania Program Director
Location: Longido, Tanzania (must be willing to relocate to Longido)

Sauti Moja-Tanzania (SM-TZ) is a Tanzanian national NGO registered in 2010. It collaborates closely with the Canadian charity, Sauti Moja (www.sautimoja.org), which has supported programs in Longido District for six years. SM-TZ invites applications for the position of Program Director, which reports directly to the Chairman of the Board. Salary will be comparable to those of other small, rural community-based organizations. Sauti Moja - Tanzania's three primary project focuses are as follows:
HIV/AIDS Health Program - The main component of Sauti Moja-Tanzania's Community Health Program is Community Conversations. Community Conversations is a UNDP developed methodology for promoting community driven change regarding HIV/AIDS education, prevention, treatment, and care.
Child Mothers Program – Sauti Moja-Tanzania is working to increase Maasai girls' opportunity for education and specifically Child Mothers: school-going girls who face pregnancies and are expelled from school as a result.
Longido Early Childhood Education (LECHE) - Sauti Moja-Tanzania recognizes that malnutrition combined with poor schooling opportunities can inhibit physical and cognitive development of young children, thereby jeopardizing future opportunities.
Purpose of Position
Reporting to the Chairman of the Board, the Program Director will be responsible for effective and efficient operations, ensuring staff accountability, and enhancing quality of programs. As a Tanzanian national, s/he will be committed to improving the lives of pastoralists by providing new opportunities for marginalized individuals and families in the Longido District. You must have demonstrated team building and leadership skills with the ability to both lead and serve, as operational activities will represent approximately 50% time. You will liaise and communicate effectively with SM-TZ stakeholders, including Sauti Moja Canada, local government and other agencies, and develop strategic partnerships and collaborate with these.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
1) Manage SM-TZ - capital, financial and human resources. You will be responsible for hiring staff, ensuring acceptable performance, and complying with Tanzanian Labour Laws and fiscal regulations (NSSF, PAYE); take overall responsibility for programming and supervision of ongoing and new projects within SM-TZ; develop budgets and ensure funds are used according to plan; and supervise 11 staff in programs and administration.
2) External relations- Government, other agencies, and communities. The Program Director represents SM-TZ in negotiations with Government of Tanzania; liaises between SM-TZ and sector stakeholders; seeks opportunities to collaborate and build strong relations with other organizations, such as NGO, community, and donor partners; and hosts international and local interns and visiting donors, as required.
3) Partnerships – grant writing, securing on-going funding, and reporting. This includes developing proposals to acquire grant funding, assisting with financial management and leading implementation of new projects; providing reports to donors on priority performance areas and progress as per donor requirements; and collaborating in advocacy and social justice initiatives.
4) Project Coordination - The Program Director will also function as project coordinator for a specific SM-TZ program.
Education
Minimum of a Bachelors Degree in Community Development or related field, such as HIV/AIDS, community health, social work, and nutrition.
Experience and skills
At least 4 years experience working in community development in Tanzania (at least 2 years of experience in the NGO sector
At least 2 years experience supervising, managing, and motivating staff
At least 2 years experience in budgeting and financial reporting
Experience in networking and donor relations, writing and submitting grant proposals, and reporting
Conducting community needs assessments, designing programs, and monitoring & evaluation
Experience working with people from different cultures, including people from abroad
Knowledge and Skills
· Demonstrated excellence in written and conversational English and Swahili is required, and fluency in Maa is desirable.
· Demonstrated ability to direct vision and guide strategic planning of the organization.
· Effective communicator, who is self-motivated, with a demonstrated ability to develop, lead, motivate and empower teams.
· Able to lead by example and provide on-going mentoring and performance management.
· Willing to stand against socio-cultural pressures to make management decisions that contribute to the effectiveness and efficiency of operations.
· Open and able to receive advice/direction or coaching in management skills necessary to direct SM-TZ.
· Must have integrity in personal conduct, sensitivity to diversity, and must demonstrate initiative and direction, adaptability, flexibility, and interpersonal and critical thinking skills.
· Must be computer literate - skilled in internet use, and Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
