Org. Setting and Reporting
 
The position is located in the Kiswahili Language Unit, Radio Section of the News and Media
Division, which produces news and feature stories on multimedia platforms
including radio, video, photo and web. The internship is for two months with an opportunity  for extension, pending on the needs of the department. The internship is unpaid and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of the Chief of the Kiswahili Unit, Radio Section.
 
Responsibilities
 
The unit is seeking interns interested in gaining professional, hands-on experience with radio and multimedia functions, specifically in interviewing, news production, digital audio recording and editing, and social media projects. Functions will include assisting in the production of news stories for various platforms.

The intern may also collaborate with staff on social media, so knowledge of Social Media platforms – Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, YouTube - is highly desirable. The multimedia intern provides editorial and technical assistance to content producers working in radio.

Education
 
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations New York Headquarters Internship Programme, Department of Public Information, the following conditions must be met:

1. Applicants must:

(a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme in broadcasting,  journalism, communications, multimedia or media studies (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme in broadcasting, journalism, communications, multimedia or media studies (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree in broadcasting, journalism, communications, multimedia or media studies (as defined in (a) or (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation.

2. Be computer literate in standard word processing and spreadsheets software applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel or similar.

3. Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

4. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

No professional work experience required.
 
Languages
 
English or French are the working languages of the United Nations. For the internship advertised, fluency in oral and written English and Kiswahili is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantaged.
