Legal Programme Intern

Overall Purpose of the Internship
The ECPAT International internship programme is designed to provide an opportunity to the eligible candidates to contribute to and learn about child protection issues, particularly children's rights to live free of commercial sexual exploitation. Interns are eligible to participate in the ECPAT International Secretariat activities. Interns are expected to carry out the duties assigned to them under the responsibility of the designated supervisor(s).
Primary Tasks
- Research, collect and analyse information on national laws, legal procedures and case law related to sexual offences against children in different countries in order to update the ECPAT commercial sexual exploitation of children legal database.
- Update the Protection sections of the ECPAT Global Monitoring of the Agenda for Action country reports and to develop draft protection sections for new country reports, by collecting and reviewing national legislation on child prostitution, child pornography, child trafficking and child sex tourism.
- Contribute to the writing of alternative reports to be submitted to the Committee on the Rights of the Child and to the drafting of Universal Periodic Review submissions on the status of action against the commercial sexual exploitation of children in States under review.
- To contribute to the analysis of the impact of ECPAT submissions to the CRC/UPR and other relevant regional mechanisms.
- Research information on regional/national level child rights monitoring mechanisms for selected countries.
- As requested, review other ECPAT publications and materials to strengthen texts related to legal framework and law enforcement.
- To assist EPAT International with translation and proofreading of publications and other documents if intern's language skills are suitable.
- On an informal and as-needed basis, assist with other ECPAT regional and thematic programmatic tasks.
Qualifications
Essential
- Degree in Law with a focus in international law and/or human rights or equivalent.
- Strong research and writing skills.
- Ability to synthesize large amounts of information into concise formats.
- Experience in working with human rights and social development issues specifically as these relate to the rights of children.
- Exposure to children's rights or other social issues.
- Good knowledge of computer applications, including Access.
Desirable
- Knowledge of international legal standards relating to the commercial sexual exploitation of children.
- Ability to communicate effectively in major languages used by members of the ECPAT network e.g. Spanish and/or French.
- Previous exposure to children's rights or other social issues.
INTERNSHIP CONDITIONS
A modest stipend of 10,000 Bath/month (around $300 USD) will be made available to the intern who is not sponsored by other organisations or institutions. All other costs related to the internship, i.e., travel, passport, visa or living costs in Bangkok, are to be borne by the intern or his/her sponsoring institution or organisation.
